C-10 Sleeper,

I posted the two links in the "Chevrolet Data" sticky above so they will be easy to access in the future. Thanks for posting the links. The diagrams are very nice and can be easily expanded.

I'm happy to help when I can. My knowledge about 67-72 body style isn't all that great yet but I'm still learning. If I can find anything helpful for the people that are interested including myself I will gladly send it this way.

Sorry trying to revive a reasonable dead thread, but i have a question about the schematic but,

I have gauges and was curious about the black wire w/white stripe at the gauge plug. Does this black w/white stripe labeled "Alternator" replace the 20 gauge brown wire from the bulk head connector to the gauges?

Working on my charging system and the brown wire is there on the engine side of the bulkhead. The brown wire w/white stripe is connected to the brown at the bulkhead, but i have no continuity between the brown and the black w/white stripe under the dash

Welcome to Chevy Talk from West Michigan!

The brown wire that sends a signal to the alternator comes from the ignition switch. The black wire with the white stripe goes to one side of the ammeter. I am not sure why it is labeled alternator.

The brown wire should read a voltage with the key on and since it is a resistor wire it will probably read less then 12 volts.

The black w/white stripe does go the guage(ammeter), it is the other end i'm curious about.
I borrowed an original service manual and i think the black w/white stripe returns to the bulk head connector and becomes a black w/double white on the engine side. From the bulkhead back down to the red wire (12 gauge) that is attached to the alternator post.

Can anybody confirm this? Wiring diagrams are not my best subject.

Wiring diagrams aren't my thing either but for me these color diagrams that can be opened up rather large are about the easiest I have found. Jim is way more knowledgeable than I am on these trucks and if someone here can give you the right answer he's one of them. I do have a question though.

You say your truck has an alternator or a generator? I'm thinking if you have an alternator someone in the past has made some changes possibly maybe part of the reason the diagram and your wiring aren't matching up. Just a possible theory since I can't physically see your truck.

When I went through the wiring in my truck I had to upgrade the wire for my ignition. I bought the correct terminals to utilize the factory bulk head connector. If you didn't really know what you were looking at or didn't pay close attention you would never know the difference. So I'm making a possible assumption if things were changed and done by someone that wanted to do a nice job you might not notice they didn't use the proper color etc. That's just my theory it doesn't mean its right or wrong but worth investigating.

The two wires from the ammeter on the original wiring routes to the bulkhead connector and from there they connect to the power wire that feeds the cab. If you look on both sides of the radiator you should find two football shaped fuse holders. The one for the wire to the passengers side is connected to the terminal block on the fender where the large red wire is connected. The driver's side is connected to the power feed inside the harness. The two wires from the gauge are set up so that the gauge receives a very low voltage because of the resistance in the feed wire over the approximate (3) feet of the power feed.

The ammeter wires have nothing to do with the alternator's functioning.

Hopefully I have not confused you!

Well, I got the alternator working, finally!!!
Now the ammeter moves, but never gets anywhere close to charging. Starts on the far left and moves even more left when the starter engages and then slightly right after the motor starts and moves around a little while running. Could it be the resister in the wire is bad?

no that i think about it... the ammeter stays on the far left "discharge" when removed from the truck. It should "center" in the absence of and input. Maybe someone has had it apart.

It is possible that the needle got bent at some time so you may want to try centering it. If you cannot center it then you will need to get another one.
